Week 13 - Feedback from GameTesting

Feedback from testing session

I went into detail on this in last weeks devlog but I will reiterate. These are the biggest takeaways I got from the testing session; Improvements:

  • Graphics fits well, but concept art should keep consistent
  • More documetation for what the player is doing
  • Could be longer, or have an explanation for each one before they start
  • A graphical approach to the countdown could be better
  • No reset function

Issues:

  • Popcorn mini-game win condition sometimes does not activate even when all the popcorn is eaten
  • Telephone mini-game keypad sometimes duplicates numbers
  • Telephone mini-game sometimes starts with an * already in the player's try
  • Player and random number stay after the mini-game concludes
  • The font being used is easy to mistake an asterisk for a plus
  • It is unclear how the popcorn has to be ejected from the bowl in the popcorn mini-game
  • A countdown can be overly time wasteful, a more visual approach could be better

I'll start with the issues as they were my biggest priority this week. Most of these were just bugs that were frustrating but entirely my fault;

  • Win condition of the popcorn game has been fixed
  • Call home keypad improved a lot
  • Added a backspace to call home mini-game
  • Fixed asterisk starting already in player phone number
  • Made it more obvious as to how to get the popcorn out of the bowl by turning the bowl half transparent

The issues I could not fix are as follows;

  • Did not find a replacement font due to time/priority reasons
  • A countdown would definitely be better but I thought another mini-game would be more beneficial

Some improvements I made based on feedback

  • I tried to make more of the over world pixel art to make the mini-games and appliances stand out better
  • Added documentation to the game page and instructions in the game
  • Game now leads back to start screen when all mini-games have been attempted
